Mearasma - Mear One Solo show at 01 Gallery

Mear, Los Angeles' greatest artist is having a solo show entitled "Mearasma" at the 01 Gallery in Downtown Los Angeles. I first saw Mear's work on a canvas at the original 01 Gallery on Melrose and La Brea. I was blown away. Based on Mear's painting displayed at 01 Gallery's soft opening earlier this year, we are in a real treat!

Press release from 01 Gallery:

Mear One, who is among the most prominent artists in the world (and not just the grafitti world) today, with numerous successful shows under his belt in galleries (his last two solo shows were in Paris, France and Portland, Oregon) and museums (he was in a major three person show at the Orlando Museum in Florida with Andy Warhol and Keith Haring a few years back, for example), is coming back to the gallery he started out in fifteen years ago, the legendary Zero One Gallery.

From his first appearance in one of the gallery's infamous "Best of the West" shows, where he arrived with his painting an hour into the opening reception wearing paint splattered clothes directly from a job spraypainting the outside of a store in the valley, got up a ladder to put up his phenomenal artpiece, and witnessed his dealer sell it within an hour to the major collecting team of Stuart and Judy Spence, he became an artist to watch. The very next month the Spences were photographed with that painting for the annual edition of Art & Auction featuring the 200 biggest collectors in the world. From that point, Mear One's career got off to a flying start and he hasn't looked back since.

Many solo and group shows followed at the Zero One Gallery where Mear One and the gallery owner, John Pochna, forged one of the closest artist-dealer relationships since Vincent and Theo, or Jasper and Leo.

This latest 01 show at their posh new downtown location in the Arts District features an exhilarating explosion of paintings, drawings and prints along with a new state-of-the-art high-def DVD that shows Mear One creating(painting is too narrow a term to describe the way he works) many of the paintings on display in this exhibition. Mear's genius is that he compels us to feel. And, that is a marvelous thing.
