The most famous wall in Los Angeles just received a color upgrade. This wall must be in more photoshoots and videos than any other graffiti wall. Every time I am in this area there is a model shoot, low rider photoshooot or a rap video being filmed. Many people associate Los Angeles life with the letter style and gray tones used in this production.
This wall was originally painted about 10 years ago. I went searching and found an old issue of Big Time Magazine from 2001 and this wall was featured in it. The original wall was painted by Mister Cartoon and Toomer. I am not sure when but the wall was changed to say The Lost Angel from El T Loko. You can see the original on the pages of Big Time.
When you first look at the colorized version, it looks like that only color was added. But that is not the case. In addition to color, much more detail was added as well. I put the details of the original and the color versions right after each other so you can see all the new details that were added.

I totally agree.....looked waaaaay better in

There is no disagreement here that the B&W was dope, but look at the detail in the angles wings and added to the girls face. The markings on the clowns face are excellent.
I think adding such vibrant color was a great tactic to get people to turn their heads to it again and actually step in and notice the new details that were added. If it had been redone and still left B&W only heads would be on it. This way anyone that has their attention redrawn to it are going to come in and I'm sure will immediately recognize the skill that was needed to do it.
Yup there was a great deal of detail added besides the vibrant colors. Something I noticed before this picture was that the girl on the far left had kind of a lazy eye and they fixed that. I lol a bit when I saw it since one of my friend pointed it out when we saw the wall this past sunday.

I like the added details - no question - particularly the girl's tears, but I still prefer the b & w...
I agree that people will definitely notice the changes to the piece - no question...
It's just my artistic preference for this piece that I think the b & w is more moving....

This represents LA so well. Great work Mister Cartoon. Props to GH for the coverage!
Daaamn I still have that mag! I trip out on how fast the time goes by. Next thing you know it will be the year 2020!!! And they should have left it Black & White...
That's a dope mag. Does anybody in LA still make graff mags?
Check out Eyeone's zine - Lost. It features a lot of Los Angeles graffiti.
it looks cool and everything but it looks unfinished, you cant just add color to one area of the whole mural its either b&w or all color

can someone tellme the address of this wall?
thanks
DUEM did the Actual Block for those who don't know
what block are you talking about?
"If it ain't broke don't fix it"
It is obvious they have no knowledge of the use of color... They completely overlooked that piece... The black and white is .
true l.A. Flavor... Gangster shit
only few appreciate street arts... better leave something unfinished, life is an unfinished business why would the art be any different...
ITZ WAY BETTER BLACK N WHITE THAT LOOK WAY HARDER THEN COLOR!!
I would be pissed if someone came over and took my name off my work and changes the words. I can live with adding detail and some stuff but to change a masterpiece so egregiously is wrong. You must respect the work for the people before you. This wasn't so two bit chump with stolen spray paint. It was the long and careful work of a true artist. Adding is fine but removing his name and changing the words is WRONG.
