Bamboo Charlie's World

Bamboo Charlie
By the Los Angeles river, a homeless man has created his own paradise. This summer I had the privilege of visiting Bamboo Charlie's Yard. It is enclosed yard located in Boyle Heights right next to the LA river.
Bamboo Charlie, as everyone calls him, has cleared a section of land overgrown by bamboo trees and made it his own living space and graffiti art gallery. Charlie keeps the area spotless. He has a generator for electricity which powers his electric stove and TV. Next time you feel like you are out on your luck, think about Bamboo Charlie. Instead of dwelling on being homeless, he took action and created his own world. Update: Check out Part 2

LA Freeways - Another November Update

We have a great group of freeway graffiti pictures. These pictures are from Pasadena, Los Angeles, Inglewood and Orange County. Some are technically not freeway spots, but freeway exits. Also, as much as we don't like to see beef, we don't make judgments, we just document the streets.

Mid-City Arts Gallery
5113 West Pico Blvd.
Los Angeles CA 90019 (directions)

"Authorities on Wednesday announced they've taken one of the Los Angeles region's most hardcore criminals off the streets -- a man who surely strikes fear into the eyes of Hells Angels, Crips, Bloods and Girl Scouts alike. That's right, he's the ... kitty cat graffiti artist. (We shiver just thinking about it)." - LA Weekly

"The detective said Ordonez kept cats as pets and described him as a "cat-lover." - Pasadenastarnews.com.

"You might have seen the "cat" tags all over downtown Los Angeles. They're on buildings and on freeways. They're the faces of cats. They might seem cute but they cost taxpayers a lot of money." - CBS News

"Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Ray G. Jurado ordered Ordonez to remain jailed on $50,000 bail, despite a defense request that he be released on his own recognizance." - Fox News

"An Alhambra graphic designer accused of being a prolific tagger responsible for painting cat figures on freeways and buildings around downtown Los Angeles was charged Friday with six counts of felony vandalism." - La Times
